Stress: a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.
We’ve all experienced it, in fact you might be experiencing it right now, that incessant chatter in your mind as you weigh out the endless possibilities of what has transpired in your life, or what might happen next.
Did I make the right decision? Do I stay or should I go? Am I a good person or am I bad? What’s wrong with me?
This battle rages on inside your mind with no end in sight, and the more you think about it the worse it gets.
Like being trapped in rushing water, this circle of thinking can be so overwhelming that eventually you barely have enough energy to make it to the couch.
But is it you that is fighting this battle inside or are you simply watching it?”
Spiritual teacher and author of The Power of Now, and A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle once wrote: “What a liberation to realize that the ‘voice in my head’ is not who I am. Who am I then? The one who sees that.”
That voice inside is your unconscious doing what it thinks it’s supposed to do, protecting you from the pain you are experiencing in your heart in this present moment and attempting to avoid or control any future pain.
By choosing to pull back for a moment and just watch your thoughts, you will see that the endless chatter in your mind is just that. Chatter.
It isn’t who you really are; you’re just witnessing it.
It’s simply the buildup of energy inside you that needs to be released but focusing on that chatter doesn’t release it at all, it merely perpetuates and prolongs it.
Once you see that you are not that voice, like watching television, you can decide at any time whether you want to continue watching or simply turn it off, and choose instead to feel that energy and then let it go.
Of course, like learning anything new, this requires focus and practice, and the first place to begin is to simply notice.
Notice your feelings as you read this article and the chatter that is already in your head, agreeing or disagreeing with this notion.
Are you excited, skeptical or afraid? Is it easy or is it too easy? Is the voice thinking about why you can do this or why you can’t?
Just notice, and hopefully as you do, you will eventually see that there is a witness to all that chatter inside your mind, and that witness is who you really are.
